rhodeskc: Phones, as explained to my Dad... →
rhodeskc: Hi Dad, Coralee told me you were looking for a smart phone. Here’s my assessment of the 4 major players: Blackberry - It’s like owning a Hyosung. Inherent design flaws, cheap, and designed to be thrown away. Friends don’t let friends ride a Hyosung. Android - It’s like owning a secondhand,… I had to look up the word “farkle” and assumed that it was more of the...

We could be getting snow tonight
rhodeskc: The very first thing I’ll do if we get snow is take Betsy outside and see how she reacts to snow for the first time :). I’ll be switching my bike over to studded tires. Well, truthfully, the first thing I do is take Sam outside, but then I do that every morning.

Far more significant are the societal roles Jobs played. And here, despite the myriad ways his companies improved our lives, Jobs was a hero only in the Ayn Randian sense.

Enter the Era of the Favorite. →
Looks like Twitter is making something out of the Favorites again. At this point, though, I wish they had Favorites *and* a “+1” or “Like” button because I would like to use Favorites like bookmarks. I guess I will just have to be disciplined and add the extra step of bookmarking the real favorites in Pinboard.

Japan's nuclear crisis and the 2011 earthquake... →
That’s how we deal with tragedies in the oil business. Accidents happen. People die. Pollution spreads. We don’t abandon oil. We study what went wrong, try to fix it, and move on. Contrast this with the panic over Japan’s reactors. For 40 years, they’ve quietly done their work. Three days ago, they were hit almost simultaneously by Japan’s worst earthquake and one...

The power of lonely - The Boston Globe →
You hear it all the time: We humans are social animals. We need to spend time together to be happy and functional, and we extract a vast array of benefits from maintaining intimate relationships and associating with groups. Collaborating on projects at work makes us smarter and more creative. Hanging out with friends makes us more emotionally mature and better able to deal with grief and...

Secrets of a Mind-Gamer - NYTimes.com →
They’ve found that top achievers typically follow the same general pattern. They develop strategies for keeping out of the autonomous stage by doing three things: focusing on their technique, staying goal-oriented and getting immediate feedback on their performance. Amateur musicians, for example, tend to spend their practice time playing music, whereas pros tend to work through tedious...

There are 17 former first-round picks from the NFL draft on the active roster for this Sundays big game, and they will all have impact. Ben Roethlisberger, Aaron Rodgers, Clay Matthews, Troy Polamalu theyll all have a lot to say about who the next world champion of football will be. But so too will the guys who never heard their name called from a podium by an NFL bigwig. Both the Steelers and...

But I must be in the minority, because if a woman is elegant and put together and just plain competent it seems that she’s immediately labeled as an uber-bitch whose downfall we’re supposed to delight in on just about every television show.

Here’s the danger: That creates weak otakus. Etewaf doesn’t produce a new generation of artists—just an army of sated consumers. Why create anything new when there’s a mountain of freshly excavated pop culture to recut, repurpose, and manipulate on your iMovie? The Shining can be remade into a comedy trailer. Both movie versions of the Joker can be sent to battle each another. The Dude is in The...

Topologist Predicts New Form of Matter  -... →
Today, Nils Baas at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology makes another startling prediction. He says that the strange, unworldly bonds that allow cesium atoms to stick together in triplets should allow much more complex objects to form too. In fact, he says we’re on the verge of discovering a brand new form of matter governed by an entirely new branch of physics.
